Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers flor de jamaica
  • 12 cups water divided
  • 1 cup granulated sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • Lime slices for garnish (optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Method
 

  1. Place 6 cups of water in a large saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Once boiling, add the dried hibiscus flowers, cinnamon stick, cloves, nutmeg, and allspice. Stir to combine.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low and gently simmer until the water turns a deep, rich red color, about 30-45 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until completely dissolved.
  5. Let the mixture steep and cool for about 20 minutes.
  6. Strain the liquid through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher, pressing on the flowers to extract all the flavorful liquid.
  7. Add the remaining 6 cups of cold water and stir well to combine.
  8. Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled, at least 2 hours or overnight for the best flavor.
  9. Serve over ice with optional lime slices and mint leaves for garnish.
