Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk whole or 2%
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt optional, to balance sweetness

Method
 

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and stir in the brown sugar until smooth.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring constantly. Let it cook for 1 minute to deepen the caramel flavor.
  3. Remove the pan from heat, then carefully add the milk and vanilla extract. Stir until the frosting is glossy and lump-free.
  4. Allow the frosting to cool slightly, then use a hand mixer to beat for 1–2 minutes until light and fluffy.
  5. Spread or pipe onto cooled cakes, cookies, or bars. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
