Ingredients
Method
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook ziti until very al dente, about 2 minutes less than package directions. The pasta will continue cooking in the oven. Drain and toss with a drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking.
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in marinara sauce, half of the Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil.
- In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella, 1/4 cup Parmesan, eggs, remaining Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until combined.
- Spread 1/3 of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half the cooked ziti, then spread with half of the ricotta mixture. Add another 1/3 of the meat sauce, then the remaining pasta, followed by the remaining ricotta mixture and finally the last of the meat sauce.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup mozzarella and 1/4 cup Parmesan evenly over the top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.
- Allow the baked ziti to rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
