Ingredients

  • 1 pound 16 ounces ziti pasta
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage for extra flavor
  • 1 medium onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 24-ounce jar marinara sauce
  • 1 15-ounce container ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese divided
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped (plus more for garnish)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or olive oil.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook ziti until very al dente, about 2 minutes less than package directions. The pasta will continue cooking in the oven. Drain and toss with a drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking.
  3. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook until softened, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  4. Stir in marinara sauce, half of the Italian seasoning, and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella, 1/4 cup Parmesan, eggs, remaining Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix well until combined.
  6. Spread 1/3 of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half the cooked ziti, then spread with half of the ricotta mixture. Add another 1/3 of the meat sauce, then the remaining pasta, followed by the remaining ricotta mixture and finally the last of the meat sauce.
  7. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup mozzarella and 1/4 cup Parmesan evenly over the top.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.
  9. Allow the baked ziti to rest for 10-15 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
