Ingredients

  • 2 cups water for simple syrup
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 bunch fresh mint leaves about 4-6 sprigs per cocktail, plus extra for garnish
  • Crushed ice plenty of it!
  • 16 fluid ounces 2 cups quality Kentucky bourbon whiskey
  • 8 mint julep cups or old-fashioned glasses

Method

  1. Prepare the mint simple syrup: Combine 2 cups water and 2 cups sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, stirring until sugar is completely dissolved. Allow the syrup to cool completely, then place in a covered container with 6-8 mint sprigs. Refrigerate overnight for the best mint infusion.
  2. Prepare your glasses: If using traditional silver julep cups, place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes before serving for that signature frost.
  3. Muddle the mint: For each serving, place 4-5 fresh mint leaves in the bottom of each chilled cup. Add 1 tablespoon of the mint-infused simple syrup. Gently muddle the mint leaves against the sides of the cup to release the essential oils, but avoid shredding the leaves.
  4. Add crushed ice: Fill each cup halfway with crushed ice.
  5. Pour the bourbon: Add 2 ounces (1/4 cup) of bourbon to each cup.
  6. Add more ice: Top with more crushed ice until the cup is overflowing slightly.
  7. Garnish and serve: Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint, slapped gently between your palms to release its aroma. Insert a short straw cut to height and serve immediately.
