Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • ½ cup 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy.
  2. Sift in the confectioners’ sugar and cocoa powder to avoid lumps. Mix on low until just combined.
  3. Pour in the milk and vanilla extract, then increase speed to medium. Beat for 2–3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Check consistency: add a tablespoon of milk at a time for a softer spread, or a bit more sugar for a firmer frosting.
  5. Use immediately to frost cooled cakes or cupcakes. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
