- Drain all canned fruits thoroughly, placing them in a colander for at least 10 minutes to remove excess liquid. Pat dry with paper towels if needed.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the well-drained pineapple tidbits and mandarin orange segments.
- Add sour cream to the fruit mixture and gently fold until fruits are evenly coated.
- Carefully fold in the mini marshmallows and shredded coconut, being careful not to crush the fruit.
- If using, add maraschino cherries and chopped nuts, folding just until incorporated.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow flavors to meld.
- Before serving, gently stir the ambrosia salad and transfer to a decorative serving bowl.
