Easy 100% Whole Wheat Bread

This 100% whole wheat bread is foolproof for beginners. It makes a hearty, flavorful loaf with easy ingredients—perfect for sandwiches or toast.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 ¾ cups warm water 110°F to 115°F
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 5 cups 100% whole wheat flour

Method
 

  1. In a stand mixer bowl, combine the warm water, honey, and yeast. Let it rest until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in the salt, then add the whole wheat flour one cup at a time. Mix on low speed until the dough pulls away from the sides.
  3. Increase to medium speed and knead for 6–8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  4. Shape the dough into a ball, place it in a lightly oiled bowl, and cover. Let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1½ hours.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan. Cover and let rise until it reaches the top of the pan, about 30–45 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until crust is golden and internal temperature is 190°F.
  7. Cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
