Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and molasses until smooth and well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, ground ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with hot water, mixing just until the batter is smooth.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with whipped cream or a dusting of powdered sugar.
