Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 15-ounce can tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup water or beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until no pink remains. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion and garlic to the beef. Cook 3–4 minutes until fragrant and translucent.
  3. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, and water (or broth). Mix until evenly combined.
  4. Sprinkle in chili powder, paprika, cumin, mustard, brown sugar, and Worcestershire. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2½–3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes to prevent sticking.
  6. If sauce is too thick, stir in a splash of water or broth. For thicker sauce, remove lid in the last 15 minutes.
  7. Spoon hot Coney sauce over grilled or steamed hot dogs, then top with diced onions and shredded cheese if desired.
