This ham and beans recipe combines great northern beans with leftover diced ham, onion, brown sugar, and spices, for a comforting and delicious meal.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound dry Great Northern beans
  • 2 cups diced leftover ham
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 6 cups water
  • Salt to taste

Method
 

  1. Gather all ingredients and rinse the beans thoroughly.
  2. Soak beans overnight in water to soften.
  3. Drain beans, then add to a large pot with 6 cups of fresh water.
  4. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 2 hours until beans are tender.
  5. Stir in diced ham, diced onion, brown sugar, paprika, and black pepper.
  6. Continue to simmer for another 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Season with salt to taste and let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
