Hearty Homemade Italian Pasta Sauce

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound sweet Italian sausage sliced
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 large onion finely diced
  • 5 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 28 ounce cans crushed tomatoes
  • 2 6 ounce cans tomato paste
  • 2 15 ounce cans tomato sauce
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for sautéing

Method
 

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks until well browned, about 10-12 minutes.
  2. Add diced onions to the meat and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Pour in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and water. Stir to combine, making sure to scrape any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  4. Add sugar, basil, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well to incorporate all seasonings.
  5. Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for at least 1½ hours, stirring occasionally.
  6. About 10 minutes before serving, stir in the chopped fresh parsley.
  7. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed before serving over your favorite pasta.
