Hearty Italian-Inspired Layered Lasagna Bake

Ingredients
  

  • 12 no-cook lasagna noodles
  • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 8 oz ground beef
  • 8 oz sweet Italian sausage casings removed
  • 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ cups whole-milk ricotta
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese plus extra for topping
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Cook noodles if needed, then drain and set aside.
  2. Sauté onion in olive oil for 3 minutes, add garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  3. Add beef and sausage, cook until browned, drain fat.
  4. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper; simmer 10 minutes.
  5. Whisk ricotta, egg, and Parmesan; season with salt and pepper.
  6. Layer sauce, noodles, ricotta, and mozzarella three times in a 9×13 dish.
  7. Cover and bake 25 minutes, remove foil, broil 2–3 minutes until bubbly.
  8. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing.
