  • 6 cups apples peeled, cored and sliced (about 6-7 medium apples)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup water or apple cider

Method

  1. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples and toss until evenly coated.
  4. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat.
  5. Add the apple mixture and water (or apple cider) to the pot.
  6. Bring to a simmer, stirring frequently, and cook for 8-10 minutes until apples are slightly tender but not mushy.
  7. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  8. Allow the filling to cool completely before using in a pie or storing.
