Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries rinsed and picked through
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice about 3-4 medium oranges
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest optional, for enhanced citrus flavor
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
  • Pinch of salt

Method

  1. Rinse the cranberries thoroughly and pick out any stems or shriveled berries.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and orange juice. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add the cranberries, orange zest (if using), cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt to the saucepan.
  4. Return the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for about 10-12 minutes. You'll hear the cranberries begin to pop as they cook down.
  5. Stir occasionally as the sauce thickens. The cranberries will burst and the sauce will begin to gel.
  6. Remove from heat when the sauce reaches your desired consistency. Keep in mind that the sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.
  7. Allow the cranberry sauce to cool to room temperature before transferring to a serving dish or storage container.
  8. For best flavor, refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
