Ingredients

  • 1 16 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Method

  1. Gather all your ingredients and measuring tools before starting.
  2. In a medium saucepan, pour in the tomato sauce and water.
  3. Add the white vinegar to the mixture and stir well to combine.
  4. Add all dry spices (cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, and oregano).
  5. Sprinkle in the brown sugar and salt.
  6. Whisk everything together until thoroughly combined.
  7. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  8. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  9. The sauce should thicken slightly as it simmers. If you prefer a thinner sauce, add a bit more water.
  10. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before using.
  11. For the best flavor development, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before using.
