Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk

Method

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
  2. Use a pastry blender (or two knives) to cut in the shortening until the mixture looks like fine crumbs.
  3. Add the milk all at once and gently stir until the dough is just moistened — do not overmix.
  4. Bring your chicken stew or soup to a gentle simmer. Drop spoonfuls of dough on top, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  5. Cover and let steam for 15–20 minutes until dumplings are puffed and cooked through.
