Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey 93% lean recommended
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • cup water or low-sodium chicken broth
  • Corn or flour tortillas for serving

Method

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened and translucent.
  3. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground turkey to the skillet and break it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks.
  5. Once the turkey is no longer pink (about 5-7 minutes), drain any excess liquid if necessary.
  6. In a small bowl, combine all the seasonings: chili powder, cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, oregano, salt, black pepper, and brown sugar.
  7. Sprinkle the seasoning mix over the turkey and stir to coat evenly.
  8. Pour in water or chicken broth, stirring to combine, and bring to a simmer.
  9. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the liquid to reduce slightly.
  10. Warm your tortillas according to package directions.
  11. Assemble tacos by adding the seasoned turkey mixture to tortillas and topping with your favorite taco toppings.
