Ingredients
  

  • ½ cup molasses
  • ½ cup honey
  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • ½ cup margarine softened
  • cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Method
 

  1. Place molasses, honey, shortening, and margarine in a medium saucepan over medium heat; stir until well combined.
  2. In a large bowl, beat granulated sugar and eggs until light and fluffy; gradually mix in the syrup mixture.
  3. Sift together flour, baking soda, spices, and salt; stir into wet ingredients until a soft dough forms.
  4. Cover and chill the dough for at least 2 hours.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 12–15 minutes until tops are set; cool on a wire rack and dust with powdered sugar.
