Ingredients

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • teaspoon baking soda
  • teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream chocolate chips, or a scoop of vanilla ice cream

Method

  1. Select a microwave-safe mug that holds at least 12 ounces. The cake will rise as it cooks, so don't use a small mug!
  2. Add the dry ingredients to your mug: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well with a fork until combined.
  3. Pour in the wet ingredients: milk, vegetable oil, water, and vanilla extract. Stir until the batter is smooth and no dry pockets remain.
  4. Microwave on high for 90 seconds to 2 minutes. Start checking at 90 seconds as microwave powers vary. The cake is done when it rises and is set but still slightly moist on top.
  5. Let it cool for 1 minute before enjoying. Top with whipped cream, chocolate chips, or a scoop of ice cream if desired!
