- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
- In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy—about 3 minutes.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Combine the flour and baking powder; gently stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
