Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy—about 3 minutes.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Combine the flour and baking powder; gently stir into the creamed mixture alternately with the milk.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  6. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
