- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Thoroughly grease and flour an 8-inch cake pan to prevent sticking.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cloves until well combined.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes on medium speed.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the applesauce. Begin and end with the flour mixture, mixing just until combined after each addition.
- Gently fold in the raisins and chopped walnuts with a rubber spatula.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading it evenly.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
