Ingredients

  • 2 10 ounce packages frozen green peas
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated sugar optional
  • 1 tablespoon fresh mint finely chopped (optional)

Method

  1. Begin by gathering all your ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process.
  2. Pour the frozen peas into a medium saucepan and add just enough water to barely cover them.
  3. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
  4. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer the peas for 5-7 minutes until they become soft and tender.
  5. Drain most of the water, leaving approximately 2-3 tablespoons of the cooking liquid in the pan with the peas.
  6. Add the butter and allow it to melt into the hot peas.
  7. Using a potato masher or fork, gently mash the peas to your desired consistency. For authentic mushy peas, leave some texture rather than creating a completely smooth purée.
  8. Stir in the heavy cream, salt, and pepper.
  9. If using, add the optional sugar and chopped mint.
  10. Heat for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently until the mixture is warmed through and has reached your desired consistency.
  11. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary before serving immediately.
