Ingredients
Method
- Begin by gathering all your ingredients to ensure a smooth cooking process.
- Pour the frozen peas into a medium saucepan and add just enough water to barely cover them.
- Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low and simmer the peas for 5-7 minutes until they become soft and tender.
- Drain most of the water, leaving approximately 2-3 tablespoons of the cooking liquid in the pan with the peas.
- Add the butter and allow it to melt into the hot peas.
- Using a potato masher or fork, gently mash the peas to your desired consistency. For authentic mushy peas, leave some texture rather than creating a completely smooth purée.
- Stir in the heavy cream, salt, and pepper.
- If using, add the optional sugar and chopped mint.
- Heat for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently until the mixture is warmed through and has reached your desired consistency.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary before serving immediately.
