Ingredients
Method
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
- Using your fingertips or a pastry cutter, work the softened butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg until smooth.
- Create a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the buttermilk mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until just combined. The dough will be sticky and rough-looking.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead a few times to form a cohesive ball. Don't overwork the dough or your bread will be tough.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score an 'X' on top of the loaf about 1/2 inch deep.
- Mix the 1/4 cup melted butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk and brush the mixture generously over the top of the bread.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Transfer to a wire rack to cool for at least 10 minutes before slicing.
