Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups brown sugar
  • 1 ¼ cups ketchup
  • ½ cup red wine vinegar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 ½ tablespoons dry mustard
  • 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 dashes hot sauce optional

Method

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients: brown sugar, ketchup, red wine vinegar, water, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, paprika, salt, black pepper, and hot sauce (if using).
  2. Whisk the mixture thoroughly to ensure the brown sugar dissolves completely and there are no lumps.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.
  4. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  5. Taste and adjust seasonings according to your preference. Add more brown sugar for sweetness, vinegar for tanginess, or hot sauce for heat.
  6. Remove from heat and allow to cool before transferring to a glass jar or airtight container.
