- In a large bowl, gently mix beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion—overmixing can make patties tough.
- Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into ¾-inch thick burgers, pressing a small indent in the center.
- Preheat an outdoor grill to high heat and lightly oil the grate.
- Place patties on the grill; cook 4–5 minutes per side for medium doneness.
- During the last minute, lay a slice of cheese on each patty, then close the lid to melt.
- Toast buns 30 seconds on the grill until golden brown.
- Assemble burgers: bottom bun, patty with cheese, then your favorite toppings and condiments.
