Ingredients
  

  • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ cup finely diced onion
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • Oil for grilling
  • Optional toppings: lettuce tomato, red onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard

Method
 

  1. In a large bowl, gently mix beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion—overmixing can make patties tough.
  2. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into ¾-inch thick burgers, pressing a small indent in the center.
  3. Preheat an outdoor grill to high heat and lightly oil the grate.
  4. Place patties on the grill; cook 4–5 minutes per side for medium doneness.
  5. During the last minute, lay a slice of cheese on each patty, then close the lid to melt.
  6. Toast buns 30 seconds on the grill until golden brown.
  7. Assemble burgers: bottom bun, patty with cheese, then your favorite toppings and condiments.
